When it comes to telecommunications, we need to ask how important it is to our economy and to the society at large, and how will telecommunications research in terms of new products and services benefit consumers in terms of enhancing their lives or improving their effectiveness or productivity?  How much scope for innovation is there left in telecommunications or has telecommunications matured to the point that it is merely a commodity service or a mere technology?

Well, we know that most of who are reading this page are consumers already, and therefore you know that the telecommunication industry plays a very crucial role in maintaining a strong economic and social order, and that a resilient telecommunication research capability is essential to the health of our changing world.

A long time ago, before there was internet and other data networks, people used the telegraph, two-way radios, and the telephone in order to communicate to people at a distance by voice, and the way the services were provided were through the public switched telephone network.

Then facsimile and data services were place on top of these switched telephone network so as to add its ability to communicate documents and data at a distance.  This application however is still considered telecommunication because of the fact that it is still a means to communicate at a distance.  This communication of documents from a distance were actually also carried over the switch boards. More recently, communication at a distance has expanded to include data transport, video conferencing, email, instant messaging, web browsing, and other forms of distributed collaboration.

First, Veracity Networks VcaaS were all carried through copper wires but presently it has expanded to other means including microwave, terrestrial wireless, satellite, hybrid fiber/coaxial cable, and broadband fiber transport.

This is telling us that over the last fifty years, technology used for telecommunications have changed greatly.  Compared to what it was in the past, the industry is much broader now.  Multiple service providers which includes telephone companies, cable system operators, internet service providers, wireless carriers, and satellite operators are now part of the telecommunications industry.  The industry today includes software-based applications with a communication emphasis and intermediate layers of software incorporated into end-to-end communication services.

To broadly define telecommunication today means that every layer involved in communication at a distance become at least partially part of the telecommunication industry.

Facility based telecommunications cloud phone system providers today serve commercial and residential customers connecting them with a single line to some of the largest private companies.  What is included in their services are VoIP plans, cloud phone systems, and a host of other applications that are relevant to our economic and social needs.
